We are proud to announce that we have successfully installed the first HERACLES neo electronic nose, an ultra-fast gas chromatography system with an embedded odor concentrator, at the Department of Chemical Analysis of the Ministry of Development and Investments, Greece.

The overall project aims to support the Department’s laboratory, which is officially recognized by the International Olive Council (IOC), in the assessment of the organoleptic properties of virgin olive oil varieties and in particular with the establishment of P.D.O. (Protected Designation of Origin) products.

To be more specific, the installation will facilitate the analysis and characterization of volatile compounds present in virgin olive oil samples and comparison of the results with organoleptic profiles provided by the highly trained sensory panel of the laboratory.

The lab team will develop a specific methodology for testing and establishing the correlation coefficient between the organoleptic profiles and the volatile substance matrix, as suggested by the AroChemBase database. The AroChemBase, designed by Alpha MOS, includes 144,759 known chemical components with their complete profiles, such as names and synonyms, chemical formula, CAS number, molar mass, retention indices, and more. Coupled with statistical analysis, the AroChemBase database offers a unique, fast and reliable interpretation of gas chromatography analysis results.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Besides the successful system installation, our company, The Science Support, with the support of our partners at AlphaMOS, delivered an advanced user training of the laboratory personnel. Mengniu, a Chinese leader of dairy products validates Alpha MOS electronic noses performance for milk control.
Alpha MOS (FR0013421286 ALNEO), world leader in odor, taste and visual analyzers for the industry, announces the official validation of its solution for milk quality control by the Chinese group Mengniu, 7th largest dairy group1 in the world and n°1 in China. This validation comes 6 months after the signature of a 2 year framework contract with the distribution company Lan Chou Instruments to equip Mengniu with Heracles NEO electronic noses2.
Mengniu is used to testing the most advanced technologies to monitor the quality of its products. They are the manufacturer first equipped with three Heracles NEO instruments to monitor under operational conditions the changes in the odor of its products over time, signs of possible abnormal aging, and also to validate the origin of the milk received in its processing plants.
The equipment validation process was achieved in several steps. After two months of continuous testing by electronic noses and human panels in parallel, Mengniu's Quality Department, with the support of Alpha MOS engineers, established a statistical model for advanced sensory data processing. Two new cycles of data collection were carried out to improve the database and the calculation algorithm. Still with a technical support from Alpha MOS, the database was finally optimized to allow to control in a systematic way the smell of raw milk from different origins, to confirm their quality and to avoid the risks of adulteration.
The Quality Department of the Chinese group explains in its press release: « It is the principle of Mengniu quality to use the most advanced equipment and technology to test the quality of products. The inspection office of the high-tech factory worked 6 months to validate [the instrument]. A total of 859 sets of data were tested by different sample components and by all raw milk suppliers [...] As a result of these tests, the introduction of the French electronic nose Heracles NEO was confirmed. »
The electronic noses are now used daily in the first two sites equipped. Eventually, the objective is that the forty sites of the customer can check the integrity of the raw milk deliveries in a few minutes as soon as they arrive at the collection center. With the regular support of the Alpha MOS team engineers, the quality control process is constantly being optimized. Thanks to this continuous improvement work, the cost and time of checking a sample have already been significantly reduced.

Satisfied with this first collaboration, the Quality Department of Mengniu is now testing the Iris, the electronic eye of Alpha MOS, in other applications such as the aging of processed dairy products and the conformity of labelling.
Pierre SBABO, CEO of Alpha MOS, recently visited the headquarters of Mengniu. He comments: « The public validation of our sensory analysis solutions by Mengniu's technical teams, beyond the immediate potential of deployment in all or part of their production sites, is a key step in the adoption of our equipment by major food industry accounts and is fully in line with Alpha MOS' growth strategy. »

Alpha MOS renews its trust contract with the British company Biffa thanks to the excellent performance of its quality control technology

With the purchase of an additional Heracles Neo in 2021, Biffa Polymers Ltd, a British company listed on the London Stock Exchange and leader for over one hundred years in the UK waste treatment industry, decided to renew its trust contract with Alpha MOS, Inc.

Biffa Ltd. has been using Alpha MOS' HERACLES electronic nose since 2017 with customer experience at the heart of the innovation strategy. Alpha MOS, has focused on  innovation and quality improvement to align with existing initiatives for brand protection at Biffa Ltd. 

HERACLES technology  can now ensure that HDPE (high density polyethylene) granules produced from recycled materials are free of residual odors and therefore comply with food quality requirements. In such a case, the advantage of HERACLES analysis, a gas chromatography-based instrument, is that it allows not only to classify by quality but also to study the chemical compounds responsible for residual odors, using the AroChemBase database. This year, Biffa has decided to acquire a second electronic nose to equip another production line!

In practice, HERACLES intervenes during the production of a batch, which can take between 20 and 24 hours for approximately 26 tons of polymer produced. A sample is taken every hour and then analyzed at the end of the batch production process: if any of them do not meet the reference quality, the whole batch is downgraded for technical use instead of food use. Mark Broad, Laboratory Manager at Biffa, comments, "With the e-nose, we can release a batch much faster than if we were using a sensory panel: in less than 12 hours instead of several weeks. Using the e-nose is very easy and in all our production teams, at each shift, at least one employee has been trained to operate the device, perform an analysis and is comfortable with using the instrument. Finally, our processing customers are fully satisfied with our products, which are mainly used for the manufacture of milk bottles, and the electronic nose is our guarantee of quality!"

드림텍, 이스라엘 기업과 `전자코 솔루션` 공동 개발…코로나 30초 만에 진단

• 전자부품 제조기업 드림텍은 30초 만에 신종 코로나 바이러스 감염증(이하 코로나19) 감염여부를 가려내는 전자코(Electronic Nose, 냄새를 구분해 화학적 성분을 분석하는 전자장치) 기반의 진단기기를 공동 개발했다고 5일 밝혔다.
  
  드림텍은 지난해 3월 이스라엘 나노기술 전문기업 나노센트(NanoScent)에 약 100만달러를 투자, 독점 공급계약 체결했으며, 전자코 솔루션에 대한 공동 연구개발을 진행 중이다.
  
  드림텍과 나노센트가 공동 개발한 전자코 솔루션은 대상자의 날숨을 통해 바이러스 감염여부를 확인할 수 있는 기술이다. 나노파티클을 이용해 호흡에서 나오는 특이한 휘발성유기화합물(VOC: volatile organic compound)을 측정하는 방식으로, 기존 체온검사나 진단키트보다 빠르고 간편한 것이 특징이고, 바이러스 잠복기에 있는 무증상 감염자의 감염여부도 스크리닝(선별)할 수 있다.

전자코 솔루션은 현재 공항 출입국 시설, 경기장, 공연장 등의 다중이용시설에서 사용 중인 열화상 카메라나 휴대용 체온계 기반의 스크리닝 절차 대비 정확도가 높다. 또 1차 스크리닝에 전자코 솔루션을 도입 시, 해외 입국자 대상으로 진단키트를 사용해 전수 조사하는 현재의 방식보다 시간과 비용을 상당 부분 줄일 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

향후 분석 알고리즘을 맞춤 개발하여 코로나19를 비롯한 신종플루, 메르스 및 사스와 같은 급성 호흡기 질환 스크리닝에도 사용될 수 있다. 헬스케어 분야 외에도 벤젠이나 포름알데히드, 톨루엔 등 유해가스 탐지가 가능해 플랜트(생산공장)와 정유, 가스산업 현장 등 다양한 분야에서도 활용 가능하다.

드림텍은 나노센트가 개발한 진단 센서를 모듈화하고, 알고리즘 분석장치와 간편하게 호흡을 담을 수 있는 전용 호흡백을 공동 개발했다. 8월 말 까지 우선 분석장치 500개와 전용 호흡백 10만개를 공급할 예정이며, 나노센트는 이를 활용해 알고리즘을 고도화한다는 계획이다.

드림텍과 나노센트는 올해 3분기 유럽통합안전인증(CE) 제출 및 승인 이후, 미국 식품의약국(FDA) 승인과 이스라엘 보건부 의료기기 규제당국(AMAR)의 품목 허가를 받아 수출국을 확대할 계획이다. 해당 기술은 한국-이스라엘 연구지원 펀드 코릴(KORIL)의 지원 대상 과제로 선정됐으며, 양사는 27개월 간 지원금 포함 약 400만 달러의 연구개발 자금을 투자한다.

에어버스, 연내 해파리 모양 센서 설치
코로나19 감염자 확인 가능할 수도

항공기 제조업체 에어버스가 폭발물 냄새 등을 감지할 수 있는 해파리 모양 센서를 기내에 설치할 계획이다. 실리콘밸리 신경기술(뉴로테크) 스타트업 코니쿠가 개발한 센서로 살아 있는 세포를 활용하는 게 특징이다.
5일 파이낸셜타임스(FT)에 따르면 코니쿠는 분자 화합물 냄새를 맡을 수 있는 생물 세포를 이용한 해파리 모양의 센서 시제품을 개발했다. 위험 화학물질 등을 식별할 수 있는 폭발물 탐지견을 모방한 기술이다. 에어버스는 이 센서를 연말께 설치할 예정이다.
현재 이 센서는 폭발물 등 악취를 감지할 수 있는 수준이다. 미래에는 신종 코로나바이러스(코로나19) 같은 질병까지 탐지할 수 있는 수준으로 개발될 예정이다.

줄리앙 투조 에어버스 미주 보안책임자는 "코니쿠 기술은 최상의 조건에서 10초 미만의 매우 빠른 응답 시간을 갖고 있다"며 "앞으로 기능이 더 개선되길 바란다"고 말했다. 일반적으로 기계는 보고, 듣고, 만지고, 움직이는 능력을 가질 수 있다. 하지만 냄새를 맡는 능력은 매우 어려운 기술로 평가받고 있다. 기계는 후각에 있어서는 인간 수준에도 근접하지 못했다.
후각이 발달한 개들은 뛰어난 탐지 능력을 갖고 있다. 하버드 헬스에 따르면 훈련된 개들은 증상조차 보이지 않는 환자의 소변 샘플에서 전립선암을 거의 문제 없이 탐지할 수 있다.

에어버스는 코니쿠의 기술이 살아 있는 세포로 기능을 강화한 실리콘 프로세서를 만들게 해준다고 설명한다. 현재 시제품으로 개발된 이 자주색 해파리 모양 센서들은 생물학에 기반해 개발한 것들이다.
2015년 코니쿠를 설립한 나이지리아 출신 물리학자 오시오레노야 애거비는 "코니쿠의 출발점은 바로 이것"이라며 "생물학이 기술"이라고 말했다. 그는 "우리는 공기를 들이마셔 무엇이 있는지를 알려주는 기술을 개발했다"며 "우리가 하는 일은 인간배아신경(HEK·human embryonic kidney) 세포나 성상 세포와 같은 뇌 세포를 채취해 후각 수용체를 갖도록 유전적으로 바꾸는 것"이라고 설명했다.

코니쿠는 직원이 20명도 안되는 회사다. 지금까지 투자 유치액은 550만달러 수준에 불과하다. 하지만 에어버스는 코니쿠의 잠재력을 높이 평가하고 있다. 코니쿠 센서는 앞으로 전염성 바이러스를 가진 사람들을 탐지할 수 있도록 개발될 수도 있다.
FT는 "특정한 질병이 어떻게 특정한 악취를 내는가를 알게 된다면 센서에 적용할 수 있을 것"이라며 "그 악취들의 분자 구조가 지도화된다면 기계들은 그 패턴을 인식할 수 있을 것"이라고 내다봤다.

코니쿠는 항공 산업을 넘어 농업, 국방에 이르기까지 다양한 분야에서 센서를 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다. 암 등 질병의 조기 발견을 위해 마치 음주측정기 형태의 가정용 제품도 개발할 계획이다. 애거비는 "아침에 일어나서 우리 장치에 숨을 쉬는 것만으로도 당신의 건강 상태를 분석할 수 있을 것"이라고 말했다.

지난 3월 인텔은 인간의 뇌를 모방한 뉴로모픽(신경망 방식) 칩인 '로이히'가 10가지 유해 화학물질의 냄새를 확인하도록 훈련시킨 방법을 소개하기도 했다. 인텔 신경계 컴퓨팅 연구소의 마이크 데이비스 소장은 "이른바 '전자 코' 시스템의 첫 번째 사용처는 폭탄과 (유해물질) 누출 감지 분야일 것"이라며 "먼 미래에는 스마트폰 앱을 통해 질병 감지까지 할 수 있을 것"이라고 내다봤다.

AlphaMOS 사의 전자코, 전자혀, 전자눈 장비에 대한 간략 소개 및

최신 활용하고 있는 방법에 대한 내용을 위주로 설명을 하였습니다.

물론 예상하시겠지만, 영어로 발표 진행이 되었습니다.

발표 슬라이드에 집중하고 계신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.

영어로 진행된 이번 세미나지만 센텀테크 이종걸 사장이 직접 현장에서 관련 내용에

대해 한국어로 번역하여 바로 바로 추가 설명을 진행하였습니다.
